A screw-finish wine bottle is unusual among closures: the thread does not exist until your line makes it. The cap arrives as a smooth aluminium shell, and rollers press its skirt into the glass thread as the head comes down. That puts every dimension of the finish under load while your line caps, so this neck is specified more tightly than almost any other in glass.
What the Cap Does to the Glass
Three things happen to your bottle in the same second. The head presses the liner onto the sealing surface. Rollers form the thread down the side. And a knife-edge tucks the bottom of the skirt under the locking ring, making the tamper band that has to break before anyone pours your wine.
Each of those needs its own dimension on your glass. A bottle out of round at any of them gives you a crooked cap, a weak seal or a band that will not break. Two of those repay a second look. L minus N is the under-tuck: your band needs 1.5 to 2.0 mm of shoulder on each side to fold under, and outside that window your tamper evidence stops working. Y sits at the bottom of the 60 mm skirt, so a deep screw finish also needs your bottle to stand straight, and Cetie asks for verticality control on necks over 50 mm.
