A dispensing closure is a small machine on your bottle. How lotion pumps, fine-mist sprayers, droppers and trigger heads work, and what each needs from the glass.

A dispensing closure carries more engineering than the bottle under it. It has valves, a spring, a chamber and a tube, and every one of those parts assumes something about your glass.

What Your Bottle Has to Give the Mechanism

Three dimensions decide whether a dispenser works. The finish designation, which sets the thread the closure screws onto. The neck height, which positions the seal. And the internal depth of your bottle, which sets the dip tube length.

Why Compatibility Testing Uses Your Real Product

A mechanism is rated for viscosity, and viscosity changes everything. A pump that moves a light toner will stall in a thick cream, and a sprayer tuned for water gives a coarse spatter with an oil.

Chemistry matters too. Essential oils attack some gasket materials, alcohol swells others, and a dip tube can craze after weeks in contact. Send your real formulation for the trial, and hold a filled sample rather than judging the first stroke.

Priming, Lock-Down and Everything Your Customer Meets

A pump needs several strokes to prime, and a customer who gets nothing on the first press assumes the pack is faulty. A lock-down actuator prevents leaks in transit but frustrates anyone who does not realise it twists.

Questions Buyers Ask Before They Order

How does a lotion pump work?

Pressing the actuator compresses a chamber and forces product out through the nozzle. Releasing it lets a spring reopen the chamber, a ball valve closes the outlet, and suction pulls fresh product up your dip tube.

What decides the dose from a pump or sprayer?

The chamber volume inside the mechanism, quoted per stroke. Your closure supplier states it, and it is a property of the pump rather than of the bottle, so a 30 ml (1 oz) and a 100 ml (3.4 oz) bottle can share one dose.

Why does dip tube length matter?

The tube has to reach the base of your bottle without kinking against it. Too short leaves product behind, too long curls and blocks, so the tube is cut to the internal height of your specific design.

Do droppers and pumps fit any neck?

No. Each mechanism is built for a finish designation such as 18-400 or a crimp collar, and the closure has to match your bottle's thread and neck height exactly for the seal and the stroke to work.
