Labelling Glass: 3 Adhesive Systems and Surface Energy

Most label failures are surface failures. How wet glue, pressure-sensitive film and shrink sleeves differ on glass, and why coatings change what your adhesive can do.

A label that lifts in a container does not usually have a glue problem. It has a surface problem, and the surface was decided long before your labeller ever saw the bottle.

Why Surface Energy Governs Your Label

Adhesive has to wet a surface before it can grip it. Bare glass has high surface energy, so most adhesives spread and bond easily, which is why glass has a reputation as an easy substrate.

Then coatings change the picture. Cold-end lubricity coating, a spray colour and a frost all lower or alter that energy, and an adhesive that gripped bare glass may sit on top of the coating instead of wetting into it.

What Your Label Panel Needs on the Drawing

A panel is not just a flat area. It has a width the label fits inside, a height clear of the shoulder radius, and a position that keeps your artwork off the mould seams.

Testing Adhesion Before You Commit

Specifications will not tell you what a container in a hot port does to your label. Only a held sample will.

Apply your real label to your real bottle, then hold sets warm, humid and chilled for as long as your supply chain takes. Peel them afterwards and look at where the failure sits: adhesive left on the glass means the film failed, and a clean lift means the adhesive never wetted your surface.

Where Coatings and Labels Collide

Three combinations catch buyers out. A frosted 750 ml (25 oz) bottle with a pressure-sensitive label, where the texture reduces contact area. A soft-touch spray coating, which grips fingers and releases adhesive.

And heavy cold-end coating, which makes a 330 ml (11 oz) bottle slide beautifully and hold labels poorly. Tell your glass supplier what you are applying, since the coating band can be matched to your adhesive at the factory.

Questions Buyers Ask Before They Order

Why do labels lift on glass bottles?

Usually the surface, not the glue. Cold-end coating, spray coating and frosting all change surface energy, and an adhesive chosen for bare glass may not wet a coated surface properly.

What is the difference between wet glue and pressure-sensitive labels?

Wet glue applies paper with adhesive at your labeller and suits high speed and low cost. Pressure-sensitive film arrives pre-coated on a liner, handles curves better and gives you a cleaner look.

Do shrink sleeves work on any bottle shape?

They handle compound curves better than any flat label, which is their main advantage. Your bottle still needs geometry the film can shrink onto evenly, without a step that traps air.

How do you test label adhesion before a run?

Apply your real label to your real bottle, hold it through the conditions the pack meets, then peel it. A 500 ml (17 oz) sample held warm and humid tells you more than any specification sheet.
