Nobody chooses a packaging material in the abstract. You choose it for one fill, one shelf life and one distribution route, and the answer changes when any of those change. Six factors carry almost all of that decision.

Where Glass Earns Its Cost for You

A short shelf life and a high-volume, low-margin fill point at PET, and pretending otherwise wastes your money. So does a distribution route where breakage is a real cost: outdoor events, sports venues, pool-side and travel formats, or a market where your product moves through many small hands.

Weight is the other honest limit. A glass bottle costs more to move at every leg, and on a long lane that difference compounds. Where your freight is the largest line in your landed cost, the material choice deserves a spreadsheet before it deserves an opinion.

Questions Buyers Ask Before They Order

Is glass better than plastic for food and drink?

For barrier and taste, yes: glass is inert, passes no oxygen and adds nothing to your fill, so shelf life and flavour hold. For weight, breakage and freight cost, PET wins. Your fill, your shelf life and your distribution decide which of those matters more.

Does glass really keep drinks fresher than PET?

Glass is an absolute barrier, so oxygen ingress over months is effectively zero. PET admits a small, measurable amount of oxygen and lets a little CO2 out, which shortens the practical shelf life of beer, wine and carbonated soft drinks. For a fill you sell within weeks, the difference rarely shows.

How much heavier is a glass bottle than a PET one?

Several times over. A 500 ml (17 oz) PET water bottle weighs in the region of 20 g and a glass one in the hundreds, so your freight, your handling and your carbon figure all move with the choice. NNPB lightweighting narrows the gap without closing it.

Can I use the same closure on glass and PET?

Sometimes, and the drawings differ. Both materials use the same finish designations, and the glass and plastic charts sit a few hundredths of a millimetre apart. Your closure supplier reads the finish drawing on the quotation before assuming a cap crosses over.
